Replacing an old boiler can be very time consuming if you don't know the basics, familiarise yourself with the 3 main types of boiler and heating system before you purchase your next boiler and find out which is best suited to you and your home...
There are 3 different types of boiler
Combi Boiler
Combi boilers are the most common type of boiler found in the UK, used by 74% of households.
Combi boilers are popular because they are efficient and cost less as they only heat water when you need it rather than storing the water. Installation is typically cheaper as well as there is less pipework.
Combi boilers are small and compact and they don't use an external water storage tank, making them ideal for smaller homes with less space.
System Boiler
System boilers use a cylinder to store hot water however they have a built-in heating and hot water system which makes them much easier to install compared to a regular boiler.
System boilers are brilliant for homes with more than one bathroom because they have a constant supply of hot water to any number of taps at the same time.
System boilers are also more economical to run because they are compatible with solar water heating systems, delivering environmental benefits as well as lower heating bills.
Regular Boiler
Also known as conventional boilers, regular boilers store hot water in a cylinder similar to system boilers but they also need a cold water storage tank (usually in the loft) to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank to maintain the water level of the central heating system.
Regular boilers are ideal in homes where lots of hot water is being used at the same time, bigger homes with two or more bathrooms and are a good option where water pressure is low.
Regular boilers, similar to system boilers, are also compatible with solar water heating systems, which gives them environmental benefits also.
